This blog is devoted to the application of optical fibers in photography. I have several homemade (DIY) flash adapters channeling the light from the flash close to the lens. The technique can be used mainly for macro photography, but I will show examples for wide angle close focus techniques as well. The recent version is called fiberstrobe V3, hence the name of the blog is "fiberstrobe".

Ringflash adapter re-loaded

In a previous post I gave a detailed description about how to build a ringflash adapter:

Few days ago I received my new flash for my mirrorless camera (NEX-5). The small flash came with this camera was very weak, but this new one has a guide number of 20, which is enough for most of the macro work. I've accommodated the end fitting to attach it to the new flash:

Minor modification was to add few fibers to direct the focus assist light to the ring for easier focusing also in the dark.

You can see a branch of fibers just below the sony sign. The new flash could feed many more fibers but I was lazy to rebuild it again.

Initial tests are very promising. At iso 200 (base iso for nex) it's no problem to achieve f25 (we would bump into the diffraction limit earlier anyway). I tested briefly outside but it works very nicely and provides a nice even light:

Now, I'm working on a twin flash adapter project. It will be also powered with the new flash. It looks cool, so stay tuned.
